You see, had I read it a decade or two ago, it would’ve made a much greater impression. And the responsibility for this turn of events lies as much in me as in the books themselves. Was it however such profoundly intellectually challenging experience I dared to hope? Alas, not entirely. Both The Shadow of the Torturer and The Claw of the Conciliator are indeed worth reading, and I hope to get my hands on the rest of the series sooner than later. I’m very content that I had finally gotten the chance to acquaint myself with this series. Hailed as a masterpiece and having won numerous awards, The Book of the New Sun remains one of the key SF works over 40 years after its conception. I don’t think I’ll be offering any new insight in this review – Gene Wolfe’s The Book of the New Sun has already been analyzed to death since its original publication date. From New York Times best-selling authors Kass Morgan and Danielle Paige comes a thrilling, dark contemporary fantasy about a prestigious sorority of witches and two girls caught up in its world of sinister magic and betrayals.Īt first glance, the sisters of ultra-exclusive Kappa Rho Nu - the Ravens - seem like typical sorority girls. This is refreshing, and is surely correct. However, Cline asserts that there is much more to the story-“a perfect storm” of human and natural factors that “coalesced” and brought about the end of the LBA (11). The prologue provides a dramatic introduction in which the now “traditional” story of the Sea Peoples is told, in which they are the major cause of the widespread destructions and collapses. The book has five chapters plus a prologue and an epilogue. It reassures us that the archaeology and history of the LBA eastern Mediterranean can have wide appeal outside academic circles. The book was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize and has been translated into numerous languages its popularity owes much to its author’s engaging style of storytelling and clear presentation of evidence. This may be surprising, given that its subject is the history of the eastern Mediterranean in the Late Bronze Age (LBA) and, in particular, the collapse of kingdoms and empires therein around the end of the 13th and the early 12th centuries B.C.E.-not, one might think, evidently mistakenly, a popular subject. Cline’s book is something special in ancient history writing-a popular best seller with academic credentials. My Ceramic Pumpkin with Glitter Owl look so festive on these pedestals. I will say out front, that the horror here stays backstage – there are accounts and inferred rape accusations about the Sheriff, who does nothing when confronted with a murder (guilty through negligence) that impacts the family. I was totally committed within pages and loved every second in the novel. Each of the sisters has a radically different personality, and added to that mix are a dominating mother, a loving if somewhat irresponsible father, and the mysterious Aunt and her HooDoo. This is a book that transports you from the first page into the easy-flowing and lovingly competitive lives of the three sisters, Pee Wee, Betty, and Ann. Tracy nails the language, details, and atmosphere. Rootwork is written from the varying povs of three black sisters living in Louisiana in 1889. This isn’t a flash in the pan, this is the culmination of a studied application of writing that a writer brings to their game. Quite aside from the fact that this book is on Mother Horror’s Dark Hart label, Tracy has received both the HWA scholarship from hell for 2022, a Ladies of Horror fiction grant, and a 2019 new voices fellowship from the emerging writer’s festival. I want to start off by focusing the start of this review on Tracy herself. The Buddha said one can use these words, but one should not be confused. When we say self, we are saying I, me, and mine. The section on “Self” is detailed and profoundly enlightening. A present-day interpretation points to a state of mind where we are “in touch with the present moment and not preoccupied with wants, needs, or issues of past or future.” The Buddha discerned that human experience is empty of a self. The last part is more contemporary.Įmptiness, a translation of the Sanskrit word shunyata, can have a number of meanings. To get two is a major blessing!Įmptiness is hard to understand, even though it is a central component of religious teaching. To come across one good book on a topic like emptiness is what I would call a blessing. |
